After the NYT/TNR back and forth of the certainty of Thomas' existence. I proposed a simple solution to an ABC news reporter.
Have Thomas stand in front of something recognizable on FOB Falcon, while holding today's edition of Stars and Stripes.
New Republic could then get a few people like me familiar with FOB Falcon and photoshop to confirm the pictures.
At least it would be known that NR has contact with someone at FOB Falcon.
Step two is when Matt Sanchez gets to FOB Falcon. Mr. Thomas reveals himself to Sanchez.
Those of involved in the verification will not divulge Mr. Thomas' true ID, but will confirm his existence and Sanchez would start on some of the stories.
If Mr. Thomas is a fabricator, then he will not be harmed.
If the stories are true, New Republic is vindicated.

As you know JD spends his time in Iraq with the Soldiers and Marines doing the work Outside The Wire. That means hundred and thousands of dollars of equipment and gear gets damaged. Three dollars buys a new protective lens cover. Fifty dollars buys a pair of ballistic glasses. Just to get there, the airfare costs $1,500.
It all helps and it is all needed to tell the story that is not being told.
