Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Risha was murdered in Ramadi by a car bomb attack.
The perpetrators of the attack obviously thought the death of the man who worked hard to organize and sustain the Anbar Awakening was a tactically wise move.
But strategically the murder of Sattar will likely fail.

Michael Totten has a great dispatch from Ramadi.
In Totten's article a Marine officer says:
"I didn't realize until I got here that the problem in Anbar Province was 100 percent Al Qaeda," he said. "The old Baath Party insurgency here is completely finished. That war was won and Americans, including me, had no idea it even happened."
That thought was expressed to me last April and it struck me as odd that we could have won or be winning and not even realize it.

Senator Chuck Schumer is trying to re-write history and we will probably see this a lot in the coming debate over Iraq.
According to Schumer, the Anbar Awakening is a result of the Marine's inability to protect the residents from Al Qaida.
There are many problems with Schumer's revisionist history--mainly that a lot of the tribal fighters working with the Marines and Soldiers are former insurgents.

A little something as I edit the upcoming doucmentary episodes for Outside The Wire Version 07-1. (Outside The Wire '05 is available now on DVD)
This is a taste of what it is like when Al Qaida attempts to over run a small outpost. The key word being attempt. Even with two large suicide truck bombs, Al Qaida failed miserably.

After 5 pages of introductory material, including this statement,
"Driven largely by the accelerating pace of tribal engagement and the increasing tempo of Coalition operations, developments in Iraq are unfolding more rapidly and with greater complexity today than when we completed our January NIE....."
As I and many have noted, the speed of battlefield has outpaced distinguished professors published in Foreign Affairs and much commentariat.
