Combat Artist

One of my fellow embeds is of a dying breed--the Combat Artist.

Where digital video and cameras are the mode of the day, he works with ink and water colors on paper.

Steve Mumford covered Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

He is back--after much negotiations with his loved ones--to cover the surgical hospital in the IZ.

I've seen a few of the warm ups he's made so far in blacks and greys.

Stunning is the only word I can think of.

I always think that moving pictures with sound is the most powerful medium, but Steve's work can intimately capture a scene and do so in a way that is so subtle, his subjects may not even realize it.

Where I have to pull out a camera, maybe a tripod, etc.

He just pulls out a pad and no one may know what he is drawing or painting.

Like me, Steve is over here on a wing and a prayer, so take a moment to go through his work.
