JD Johannes is the creator and director
of the Outside the Wire series of documentaries.
Since 2005, Johannes has produced five
documentaries about the war in Iraq. The most recent, 'Baghdad
Happens' is the only autobiographical documentary where he is a part
of the narrative.
A former Marine, television news producer,
US Senate staffer, political campaign manager and Assistant to Kansas'
Attorney General, Johannes first trip to Iraq as a reporter was in 2005 with elements
of his old Marine Corps unit. He was one of the first of the independent
embeds and produced syndicated television news reports for local TV
stations.
Johannes works as a one-man-band in Iraq
shooting all the video and conducting all the interviews himself.
He writes, edits and narrates the documentaries as well. Invaluable
post production work is done by his long time collaborator David
Chavarria.
Johannes reporting from Iraq has appeared
in TIME, National Review Online, TCS Daily, the Topeka Capital Journal. His footage has been featured on programs on the History Channel and A&E network.
In addition to the Outside the Wire documentary
series, Johannes has produced commissioned documentaries, television
commercials and TV series for domestic distribution.
His forthcoming book 'Fit for Combat',
an exercise and diet book co-authored with IFBB Professional Fitness
Athlete Nita Marquez, will be released in the Spring of 2009.
Johannes lives in the midwest, in a city
where very few people know what he does overseas.
He admits to being mildly addicted to
combat.
